From Quiet Beginnings to Confident Living: Lilly’s Story at Bay Court

Lilly

Lilly is a 93-year-old lady who moved into Bay Court Care Home following a lengthy hospital stay after falling and breaking her hip at home.

Prior to admission, Lilly’s daughter explained that she was expected to spend most of her time in her bedroom and was generally quite an insular person who did not tend to socialise widely. The team therefore approached her care with a strong focus on understanding her personality, routines and interests from the very beginning.

Support, Engagement and Personalised Care

A detailed pre-admission assessment was completed in partnership with Lilly and her daughter to better understand her likes, dislikes and hobbies.

One of the most important discoveries was Lilly’s love of Elvis. The team used this as a meaningful way to encourage engagement, playing Elvis music in the dining areas to support her with mobilisation to mealtimes and help build confidence with moving around the home independently.

This interest was also incorporated into themed movie afternoons and evenings featuring Elvis films, which helped create shared experiences and encouraged Lilly to spend more time socialising with other residents.

Positive Outcomes and Progress

Lilly is now one of the most sociable residents at Bay Court Care Home and regularly takes part in a wide range of activities, many of which are shared on the home’s social updates.

She has become noticeably more open and confident, often engaging in long conversations with residents and staff. Lilly is especially passionate about sharing stories from her life, including her memories of growing up during the Second World War, which others find fascinating and meaningful.

She now mobilises independently with her walking aid throughout the home, whether attending mealtimes, visiting the café, or joining in activities and conversations with others. This increased independence has had a clear positive impact on her overall well-being and quality of life.

“Watching Lilly flourish has been a pleasure. When we completed our pre-admission assessment, we were expecting a quiet lady to move in, which has turned out to be the opposite.” - Home Manager
